INTRO TO SEA KAYAK SURFING

By far, one of the most fun lessons! Surfing waves in a sea kayak takes skill and patience; the reward is a fun ride to shore. The mouth of the Layou River offers beginner kayak surfing in a beautiful valley. The fishermen's beach has a shore break on both sides of the river mouth as well as at the mouth of the river. Layou village is also home to some of the best bakes on the island! The lesson includes time to paddle up into the river and cool off. Paddlers will enjoy catching manageable waves and learning how to 'read' the sea.

OPEN OCEAN KAYAKING

Experience the Atlantic Sea from a very unique setting on the East Coast of Dominica. The fishing village of Stowe offers a protected fishing jetty into a semi-protected bay. This is the perfect place to experience open ocean conditions with an accessible launch/landing site. Kayakers will be able to work as a team to paddle in a variety of conditions due to the unique geography and bathymetry of the bay.

INTRO TO OPEN OCEAN KAYAKING

The beauty and magic of the open sea are unmatched in a sea kayak. This class will open a whole new world to you! This is an excellent opportunity to paddle into the Martinique Channel from the calm Caribbean Sea to experience open ocean conditions and test your skills. You will actively practice stern rudders, bracing, and turning in the wind. Participants will plan the mini-expedition together based on their collective knowledge of sea kayaking (with feedback from the instructor).

SAFETY FOUNDATION

BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE | 3 HOURS

Graduate from this fun class and begin to explore the sea on your own! You will leave the course ready to paddle Dominica's beautiful coastline and have a unique experience on the sea. This lesson introduces various rescue techniques including the paddle float rescue, the t-rescue, and the cowboy rescue. The foundation of safety will also incorporate group travel and 'reading the sea'. All safety equipment will be reviewed. All participants will be required to practice all of the rescues. The fundamentals of towing will also be covered. 'Reading' the sea will be introduced.

FUNDAMENTIALS OF SEA KAYAKING

BEGINNER | 3 HOURS

Experience the sea as few people do. Secure the skills to further explore Dominica's beautiful waters and rugged coastline. You will build on your knowledge of sea kayaking. Stern rudders will be a key paddle stroke during this lesson. The concept of edging will be introduced as it applies to turning the kayak. An emphasis on balance will prevail throughout the lesson. Bracing will be introduced and you will practice it combined with balance. You will be introduced to a self-rescue and practice it.

INTRO TO SEA KAYAKING 101

BEGINNER | 2.5 HOURS

Become part of one of the fastest growing and most accessible water sports! Learn to explore Dominica's beautiful Caribbean Sea in a swift modern fiberglass sea kayak. Gain the skills to go places few have been. You will learn the basics of sea kayaking. First, you will learn all of the parts of the boat, equipment, and terminology. Next, you will learn how to launch/land a kayak. The rest of the day will be spent learning the basic kayak strokes. The emphasis will be on the forward stroke, turning, and handling wind. Safety will be at the forefront of the lesson. 'Reading' the sea will be introduced.
